Do You Want to Plant Cabbage Hydroponically
Cabbage isn't really difficult to grow, although insects are often a problem when grown outdoors. You can expect to have to spray it with something to control insects in the wild, but it can be an organic product. You can also use summer weight row covers to protect not just cabbage but all other outdoor plants from harmful pests. If you are just trying to protect a small bed or some containers, make grow tents out of them, it is easy to make and the fabric is much cheaper than sprays.
Can You Grow Cabbage Indoors?
Yes, you can. Brassicas, like leafy vegetable
crops, can withstand at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. This means that
while it may take a little longer to get your cabbage crop to harvest under
low-energy grow lights, it is possible. Try to produce varieties with a small
head, as they take fewer days to mature and are more compact in terms of width
and root mass. There have been reports of cabbages growing with kale under T%
HO lamps and they are doing very well. However, do not try to run your lamps
for only 6 hours a day, an hour of fluorescent lighting is not the same amount
of time as exposure to the sun. Count on at least 12 hours a toady and consider
using the XHO headlights for faster harvesting without a huge increase in power
consumption.
Things to Know Before You Begin
Cabbage
is a heavy feeder, so it consumes the nutrient solution much faster than a crop
like lettuce. Make sure to keep an eye on nutrient levels no matter what type
of hydroponic grow tents you are
using for this grow. Make sure they don't come out and dry out, as this puts
them under stress, which invites pests and diseases, even in the indoor garden.
Insufficient humidity outside combined with excessively high temperatures will
also cause cracks. A cracked head equates to a ruined crop.
Do not overplant the space you have to grow
cabbage. Placing too many plants in one warehouse will definitely increase your
maintenance needs. Check the planting space on the seed packet while planning
your cultivation.
Can you grow cabbage hydroponic?
Yes, one more time.
Growing a large crop of cabbage is no more
difficult than growing lettuce. You can also have success with this plant using
the non-circulating Kratky method, which means that the only energy you need is
the consumption of your grow lights. However, their heads will be larger at
harvest if you harvest on floating raft beds rather than on a conveyor system.
Check your pH in the tank. For cabbage, you
should leave it at 6,570.
You can grow hydroponic cabbage outdoors. It
tolerates temperature drops very well and does not spoil in the autumn garden
when the frost hits. However, you may want to set up your hydrobed so that it
has some shade during the hottest part of the day. Moisture can be a bigger problem
outdoors than indoors. If you live in a humid area, you probably won't have any
problems, but in a dry climate, rising summer temperatures can leave you with
problems that you wish you had grown cabbage indoors.
In the first video below, you can see why you
don't want to cram too many of these large plants into your hydro facility. The
second shows how much influence your choice of hydrometeor logical method will
have on the size of your cabbage at harvest time. Efficiency always gives you
more food than frugality when growing your own...
Bobby, the MHP gardener, also had some great
tips on how to grow really impressive cabbage in the ground, organically. Did
you catch it at the end of the second video above? Hopefully, you've noticed
their discovery that bags or buckets aren't the best cabbage crop, although if
that's all you have, it will work.
